This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Great historical read, although I'm sure there is some exaggeration of the physical trials some of the people, native and otherwise, suffered through. Hypothermia, for example, wouldn't have taken a hiatus as many places in the text suggest. Without doubt this nartative puts to rest the idea of the noble savage; clearly and simply the times necessitated survival of the fittest in the purest sense.Product details

The Jesuits in North America in the Seventeenth Century Francis Parkman Books Reviews
Great story, Not the tale told in schoolbooks.
The book came in the mail and when I opened it, it was blank. There are perhaps ten printed pages in the book, but most are blank. This is ridiculous.
Parkman writes beautifully of the tragic fate of the Hurons and the Jesuit mission to them. Avowedly a "heretic", his presentation of the religiosity and internal lives of the missionaries makes this an enchanted and enchanting history of the mid-seventeenth century in Canada.
High adventure around the Great Lakes over 300 years ago, not to mention such exemplary virtues
that can inspire young people even in the Twenty First century. These amazing New Frenchmen
and their stories should be told and retold, like the chronicles of King Arthur and his Knights of
the Round Table.
If you want a book that is 90% blank pages this one is for you. I purchased two book - as I assumed the first one was a misprint..no!
This book was free, so I can't be too critical. Written in an older language style, it is difficult for me to read. Some of it is even in French, which I cannot read at all, however, I wanted to learn something about the Jesuits, so this works out for that purpose.
It was pretty basic, like a 5th grade social studies book. Still it was good for learning the basics of what happened in early Canada with the Jesuit missionaries to the native peoples if you haven't heard it before. Not an adventure story, though there must have been plenty of adventure involved. Could be written as a historical novel that would really hold your interest.
Great historical read, although I'm sure there is some exaggeration of the physical trials some of the people, native and otherwise, suffered through. Hypothermia, for example, wouldn't have taken a hiatus as many places in the text suggest. Without doubt this nartative puts to rest the idea of the noble savage; clearly and simply the times necessitated survival of the fittest in the purest sense.
